High in Hops or Mostly Malt?

While enjoying a delicious Belgian-style Quad last night, we asked the following question on Twitter:

Lots of hops or lots of malt? Which end of the beer spectrum do YOU prefer?

We received a good number of responses and the results were surprising.

Sure, most would answer, “Both please!“  A perfect balance of the two is usually preferred.  But some styles do go extremely one way or the other.

So if you had to choose one end of the taste spectrum, would you rather have a big, over-the-top hop bomb or a heavy dose of malted barley? What is your preference? And what are some of your favorite variations of your preferred style?

And sorry, “lots of ABV!” is not a valid answer.

    Yes!

But, if forced to choose, give me the hops.

Hoppy with not too sweet, malt = sweet, Between Green flash ipa and Sierra Neveda Celebration. Double ipa’s above 9% NOT.

I would take a hop bomb. I like malt, but I also enjoy not being able to taste anything for a day or two. Maybe a Hop Wallop?

This time of year I love the malt. I still have about 3 cases of Märzens left. I look forward to them all year long.

But all year round I love a nice hop bomb.

Malt. If I have something really hoppy it has to have a strong malt backing. I would have to say that I’m a malt man for the most part. However, I nicely hopped Pils or Lager is great. I think it’s more cascades I dislike than anything.

Find balance, grasshopper….find yourself a Goose Island Honkers Ale. It’s got drinkability…er …I mean it’s the best of both worlds.
Barley Wines (American and English)You have to have the malt to back up the hops or you are left with a IIPA

    Malt.

If I had to pick one beer to drink for the rest of my life it would be either Brewers Art Resurrection or Ommegang Three Philosophers.

I definitely lean to the malt side of the spectrum. I love the Three Philosophers, and also enjoy a good dubbel like St.Bernardus Pater 6. I’ll occasionally order something hoppy to switch things up, but that’s only occasionally.
